NCB Now: Traditional outdoor play under threat

New research from NCB's Play England and Savlon reveals that children are at risk of losing out on the essential childhood experiences that outdoor play brings.
Activities that were a part of parents' childhoods seem to be in danger of disappearing:
- Forty-two per cent of children report they have never made a daisy chain
- Thirty-two per cent have never climbed a tree
- Twenty-nine per cent have never built a den
- A quarter have never had the simple pleasure of rolling down a hill
- One in 10 children have never ridden a bike
The research marks the launch of Playday, the national day for play, being held on 3 August 2011. The campaign, celebrated at hundreds of community play events nationwide, aims to highlight the importance of play in children's lives, and encourages action so that children can play outside more.
